Ed's All-Time Favorite Songs
Last update and revision: January 6, 2023

Below is a list of my 514 all-time favorite songs.  It is sorted alphabetically by song title.

I'm very proud of this list.  I've been compiling it off and on, for a long time.  In fact, you could say I've been working on it over a period of almost 50 years!

I first began the list, in the early to mid 1970s!  (Back then I kept track of the songs I liked on paper, of course.)  For years, every time I heard a song I really liked on the radio or television or wherever, I would make a mental note to add it to my list, assuming it wasn't already there.

In order for a song to make this list, and be considered an all-time favorite, one of my "rules" is the song has to be a favorite of mine for at least ten consecutive years.  This is why you see no songs (or very few) from 2012 to the present listed.  (Now and then I do make an exception.  Hey, it's my rule so I figure I can break it if I want to.  Currently there are seven such exceptions.)

However, you probably won't see very many songs from the last 20 or so years EVER listed here, because for the most part, most all music from 1995 to the present is crap.

From time to time, I revise the list, removing songs that are no longer an all-time favorite, either because my taste has changed a bit, or because I simply need to make room on the list for the recent songs that are now eligible that I wish to include.  (It is my goal to try to keep the number of songs on this list at, or very near, 500.  The list contained exactly 500 songs for a very long time, but I recently added a few more, and I haven't yet decided which ones, if any, should be removed.)

Believe me, there are literally thousands of other songs I enjoy listening to.  My personal MP3 collection, that I've been adding to and editing and working on for more than 20 years, includes more than 1,600 songs, and every single one of them I enjoy.  So yes, for a song to make this all-time favorite list, it really has to be special.

Note that only one song of each title may be listed!  (That's another "Ed Rule.")  For example, I really like the song Son Of A Preacher Man, by Dusty Springfield.  And yet I also like Nancy Sinatra's version, Tanya Tucker's version, and Sarah Connor's version!  But under the rules for this list, I can only list the song one time.  (Dusty's version gets the nod... but just barely.  I like the others too.)  My actual MP3 collection of  songs has no such limitation, and thus I have a copy of all four of the above versions mentioned.

Songs listed with an asterisk (*) in the second column indicate this song is a Top 100 Favorite!

Songs listed with a double asterisk (**) in the second column indicate this song is a Top 25 Favorite!  (Note:  Currently 28, not 25 songs have a double asterisk.)   For a song to be given two asterisks, out of a total 1,600+ songs in my collection, that's high praise indeed!

The year listed in the fifth column indicates the year the song made the Billboard Hot 100 list.

The number in the sixth column is the highest position this song reached in the Billboard Hot 100.

If there is a year listed in the seventh column, it means this song was the Billboard Number 1 Song (Pop Chart) for that entire year.

Finally, a "Yes" in the final column indicates this song by this artist is a One Hit Wonder!   (A One Hit Wonder means this song is the only Billboard Top 40 Hit this artist EVER had.)

The breakdown of songs by decade looks like this:

  1950s 2 songs .389%
  1960s 66 songs 12.84%
  1970s 286 songs 55.64%
  1980s 128 songs 24.90%
  1990s 14 songs 2.72%
  2000s 11 songs 2.14%
  2010s 7 songs 1.36%
    514 songs 100.00%

It should be no surprise that more than 80% of my all-time favorite songs are from the greatest era in music... the '70s and '80s!

Enjoy the list!

June 2016 Update:  Thanks to Jenna Lloyd of Irvine, CA for pointing out that Janis Ian's At Seventeen was NOT a One Hit Wonder for her!  Society's Child, released way back in September of 1966, was also a top 40 hit for her!  (It reached #14 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.)

I'm still coming across other small errors.  For example, they are known as the Jackson 5, not the Jackson Five.  It was Wings who sang Silly Love Songs, not Paul McCartney & Wings.  The name of the group is Barenaked Ladies, not Bare Naked Ladies.  I recently fixed all of these errors and with a list of this size, I suspect there may be a few more.  Any such errors pointed out to me will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!
